The Supreme Court collegium had earlier recommended him to head the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Following reservations raised by the government, the collegium modified its recommendation and proposed his name as the Tripura High Court chief justice.

Lawyers will continue to abstain from work in all Delhi district courts on Friday. However, litigants will be permitted to have access to the court rooms, a spokesperson of the lawyers' coordination committee said on Thursday.

Lawyers in all the seven district courts in Delhi have been on a strike since November 2 after a violent clash with the Delhi police over a parking issue.

In a major relief to people of Gujarat, cyclone 'Maha' fizzled out into the Arabian sea as a 'depression' without making a landfall in the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

The cyclone over the Arabian sea started weakening rapidly on Wednesday and turned into a 'deep depression', and then a 'depression' by Thursday morning, it said.

A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court on Thursday seeking action against police officials who were agitating in public and sitting on 'dharna' in the wake of November 2 clash with lawyers at the Tis Hazari courts complex.

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL), which also sought action against police officials who had issued statements on social media when the matter is already sub judice, is listed for hearing on Friday.

Delhi's Air Quality improved from "very poor" category to "poor" category on Thursday morning, giving some respite to people grappling with severe pollution.

The air quality index was recorded at 214 this morning.

An AQI between 0-50 is considered ‘good', 51-100 ‘satisfactory', 101-200 ‘moderate', 201-300 ‘poor', 301-400 ‘very poor' and 401-500 ‘severe'. An AQI above 500 falls in the severe plus category.

On Wednesday morning "unidentified armed individuals" ambushed five buses carrying local employees, contractors and suppliers of the Samafo mining company, said Saidou Sanou, the governor of the country's Est Region.

As well as the 37 civilians killed, 60 were wounded, he said.

Mine owner Semafo Inc. said the five buses escorted by the military were approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Boungou gold mine in the Tapoa province when they were ambushed.

A security source said "a military vehicle that was escorting the convoy hit an explosive device".
