Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday lashed out at the BJP-led governments at the Centre as well as in Maharashtra over the plight of onion famers in the country who are getting a pittance for their produce while onion is soaring at Rs 100 per kg in retail.

“What has the BJP government done to the poor farmers? Onion is being imported from other countries to check its soaring prices but our own farmers are not being paid the fair price of their hard-produced crop,” Priyanka Gandhi wrote on Twitter.

She also shared a video of a distraught onion farmer from Maharashtra who is in tears over his plight. He is asking the government as to how can he feed his children when the price his is being paid for his crop by the traders at the mandi is even lower than his input cost.

“The farmers are being paid merely Rs 8 per kg for onion while the vegetable is selling at Rs 100 per kg in the market,” the Congress general secretary rued.
