Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on August 9 reached Srinagar for a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. He received a grand welcome from his party workers and followers. This is his first visit to the erstwhile state since the abrogation of Article 370.

The Wayanad MP is scheduled to inaugurate the party's headquarters in the union territory. He will also interact with leaders and party workers during his visit. The Congress leader will hold series of deliberations with party leaders and workers.

The inauguration of the party headquarters was earlier delayed due to COVID-19. The Congress leadership of Jammu and Kashmir had approached Rahul Gandhi for a short visit, according to the local media reports.

During his visit, Rahul Gandhi had attended a wedding reception of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Ahmad Mir's son at a hotel on Monday evening.

Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi offered prayers at the famous Ragnya Devi temple popularly known as Kheer Bhawani temple in Ganderbal district. He was accompanied by the party's general secretary organisation K C Venugopal.

In August 2019, the Centre had abrogated Article 370 which gave special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the region into two territories-- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
