The Centre Sunday expressed "deep concern" over continuing violence in West Bengal, saying the "unabated violence" even after the Lok Sabha polls appears to be a failure on part of the state government.
In an advisory to the West Bengal government, the Ministry of Home Affairs also asked it to maintain law and order, peace and public tranquility.
"The unabated violence over the past weeks appears to be a failure on the part of the law enforcement machinery of the state to maintain the rule of law and inspire confidence among people," the advisory said.

A day after a violent clash broke out between the Trinamool Congress and BJP workers in Bengal's North 24 Parganas district in which eight people are feared dead, Trinamool Secretary General Partha Chatterjee on Sunday accused the saffron outfit of disrupting law and order in the state by resorting to vandalism and murder.

A major fire on Sunday burnt three coaches of the Silchar-Trivandrum Express train while stationary at station in Silchar, the main city in southern Assam adjoining Tripura, officials said.
No one was hurt in the incident. The Trivandrum bound Express train, which arrived here at midnight on Saturday, was scheduled to leave Silchar station at 8.05 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
According to police officials, the fire broke out on Sunday morning from a sleeper class compartment adjacent to the pantry car of the train at Silchar station, 380 km northeast of the state capital.

Sheela Gautam, a four-time BJP MP from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh and the founder-chairperson of the famed mattress company Sleepwell, has died in the national capital, officials have confirmed. She was 88.

Over three dozen passengers aboard a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight were offloaded after one of them mistakenly opened the emergency door of the aircraft on the runway at the Manchester airport in the UK, the national carrier said.
"The PIA flight, PK 702, from Manchester to Islamabad was delayed by seven hours. The departure was delayed on Friday night when a passenger erroneously opened the emergency exit causing the emergency chute to activate," Dawn quoted a PIA spokesperson as saying on Saturday.
Nearly 70 hours after two-year-old Fatehvir Singh fell into a 150-foot-deep borewell in Punjab's Sangrur district, officials Sunday said the operation to rescue him is in its "final stage".
Fatehvir, who is the only child of his parents, fell into the unused borewell in a field while he was playing near his house around 4 pm Thursday, officials said.
The seven-inch-wide borewell was covered with a cloth and the boy accidentally stepped on it. His mother tried to rescue him, but failed.
"The rescue operation is going on and is in its final stage. It is expected to be completed today," Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Ganshyam Thori said.

An Army para commando was killed in accidental firing on Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district, police sources said.
Taran Kumar of 31 para regiment, who was attached with army's sector headquarters in Manasbal area, was critically injured when he was cleaning his service rifle.
Kumar was shifted to army's base hospital in Srinagar but he succumbed, the sources said.
Weeks after the Balakot air strikes, the government decided to fast-track integration of the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile on over 40 Sukhoi fighter jets, a closely guarded strategic project aimed at bolstering combat capability of the Indian Air Force, official sources said Sunday.

After the onset of the Southwest monsoon was delayed by a week, the India Meteorological Department on Sunday said it has further advanced in the south Arabian Sea, most parts of Lakshadweep and some parts of Kerala and south Tamil Nadu among other regions.
It also pointed out that the conditions were becoming favourable for the monsoon to advance into some parts of Northeastern states over the next 48 hours till Tuesday.
The onset of the monsoon over Kerala was forecast to be June 1, but it only hit the coast on Saturday.

At least five persons were killed and 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a trailer in Pakistan's Punjab province, according to a media report.
