Hours after former Congress president Rahul Gandhi urged Modi government to come up with the welfare schemes like NYAY and MNREGA to boost the economy during an interaction with the regional media, he hit the streets in Delhi to meet the migrant workers on Saturday.

According to the Congress party, Rahul Gandhi met a Jhansi bound caravan of the migrant workers near Sukhdev Vihar flyover in Delhi.  He spent almost an hour with the migrants, listening to their plight and sufferings, said the party.

In photos circulated on social media, Rahul Gandhi can be seen wearing a face mask and sitting on the pavement as he talks to a small group of migrant labourers.

“Rahul Gandhiji came to speak with us. He wanted to know the difficulties we are facing. We told him we're dying of starvation here... there is no work anywhere. It has been 50 days like this,” Mahesh Kumar, one of the migrants was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

“At least someone is listening to us. He said he would try to help.” Mahesh Kumar added

“How much can we earn in four days, in five days? Whatever money we have is spent on food,” he said, adding that he was thankful that Rahul Gandhi had stopped to listen to their troubles.

Devendra, another member of the migrant group, told ANI that Rahul Gandhi had given them food, water and face masks for protection from the COVID-19 virus.

He also said that Rahul Gandhi had arranged transportation for them, in cars, to their hometowns and villages.

However, after Rahul Gandhi's interaction, Congress alleged that the Delhi Police which comes under the Home Ministry, tried to detain the migrants. However, the DP denied the claim. Police sources were quoted as saying by the news agency ANI that the migrants had only been stopped for violating social distancing rules.
