On Saturday, March 27, exactly at 8.30 pm, darkness loomed over the official residence of the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot at the Civil Lines in Jaipur. People thought there was a breakdown in the power supply. But the street lights were on and so were the lights of the Raj Bhawan which is close to the Chief Minister’s residence.

There was complete silence inside the Chief Minister’s residence and even the vehicles were not allowed to be plied inside the residence. All the car drivers were instructed not to start their cars or put on the lights on their cars. Those who were inside the official residence were asked to vacate before 8.30 pm. The main gate of the residence was bolted from inside and for a full one hour, the Chief Minister’s residence was lit only with candles, to observe Earth Hour on Saturday.

The day holds great significance as it calls for action on various roles and ways that people can act on to raise awareness about the importance of nature. As the lights dim in homes and cities, Earth Hour will bring people together to put a virtual spotlight on our planet and the role people can play in global efforts for nature.

Started as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007 by WWF and partners, Earth Hour is now one of the world's biggest environmental grassroots movements. It is held annually on the last Saturday of March, involving millions of people in over 180 countries and territories turning off their lights to express respect for our world and to raise awareness about climate change.

During the Earth Hour, nearly 2.2 million people turn off their lights as a sign of solidarity globally. This hour showcases the need to take action on the pressing issue of global climate change. Earth Hour promotes awareness about environmental issues on a public platform.

Gehlot spent an hour in the drawing-room along with his wife Sunita and his friend, former Advocate General Girdhari Singh Bapna and his wife Manju. Candles lit the drawing-room for an hour and the lights were put on at the residence exactly after an hour.

The Chief Minister observed the Earth Hour for the first time and next year, he would make an appeal to the people of the state to observe it to support the grassroots environment movement.
