Twitter is suddenly abuzz with people – from celebrities and politicians to students – posting pictures of themselves in sarees with the hashtag #SareeTwitter.

The hashtag first appeared on Monday and has since become quite popular internationally.

A saree or shari, for the unaware reader, is a traditional garment from India which varies between 5 to 9 yards and is draped. It is usually worn with a bodice and a petticoat. It is the garment of choice among many women for regular use in India while others reserve it for festivals and ceremonies.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi tweeted, “Morning puja on the day of my wedding (22 years ago!)“

After the #100daysofsaree challenge which was trended a few years ago, this seems to have become the new means to showcase style, fashion as well as national and traditional pride.
