Taking a dig at the BJP, Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi said, “Those doing politics of falsehood will not understand Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence.” She said Gandhi's soul would be pained by what's been happening in India for the last few years.

Sonia Gandhi was speaking at Rajghat, concluding a rally the Congress held to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birthday. “Those trying to misuse Mahatma's name will not succeed,” she said claiming that the BJP’s mentioning of Mahatma’s name is mere tokenism, they are not following his ideologies.

In what appeared to be a swipe at the present BJP leadership, Sonia Gandhi told party workers and leaders at Rajghat that the Mahatma's soul would be pained by what has been happening in India in the last few years.

Slamming the BJP, she said, "Quoting Gandhi is easy but it is tough to follow his path. Those who are trying to use his name but are taking India astray from his teachings will not succeed. India has Gandhi's principles in its foundation. Some people are trying to make RSS a symbol of India and sideline Gandhi. Those who are doing politics on mistruth will never understand Mahatma Gandhi."

Taking a swipe at the Shahjahanpur case, she added,"Today women are not safe and those who are powerful commit crimes with complete impunity. Gandhi ji stands for love, not hate. He is for democracy, not dictatorship. Only Congress has followed Mahatma Gandhi’s path and it will continue to do so."

Sonia Gandhi also said, "Those who want to have absolute power will never understand Gandhi." Addressing the gathering in Hindi, she said no matter what others might claim, only the Congress has followed the path of Gandhi and has provided jobs, education and facilities to farmers, accomplishments which are unparalleled.
