These people better kill me, says slain Inspector Subodh’s wife as main accused gets bail

Rajni Singh said that the bail of all the accused belies the police claim that they had prepared a watertight case against the culprits, adding that there was little integrity left in judicial system

Rajni Singh, the wife of late police Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh who was killed by a Hindutva mob in UP’s Bulandshahr last year, said that she is very disappointed with the judicial system that has so far failed to get justice for her husband who laid down his life in the line of duty.

“Tell me, if this system cannot ensure justice even for those who lay down their lives for the country then who else can expect to get justice? If he (Subodh Kumar) doesn’t get justice, who will?” Rajni said while speaking with NDTV, fighting back her tears.

Her reaction came after Yogesh Raj, the main accused in the case and the local Bajrang Dal convenor, was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday.

Rajni Singh said that the bail of all the accused belies the police claim that they had prepared a watertight case against the culprits.

“I have normally seen that those booked under the National Security Act (NSA) do not get bail before at least a year. But all of them have got bail within a few months,” she said.

Inspector Subodh Singh, who was the Station House Officer (SHO) of Syana police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district, was killed by Hindutva activists on December 3 last year as he tried to control the mob that went berserk after the recovery of some cattle carcasses in sugarcane fields in Mahav village.

The Hindutva activists alleged that the carcasses were that of cows, an animal revered by the Hindus.

A visibly dejected Rajni Singh said: “I can’t understand how come these people are not the culprits. Had Yogesh Raj and Shikhar Agrawal not incited the mob, the head of my family would have been with me.”

“Looks like this judicial system is only for the powerful. This has become a system. These goons will go to the heads of their outfits and lick their soles, and the chiefs of these outfits will do dalaali (brokering) for them in turn. This is the system now. There is little (integrity) left in the judicial process now,” she said.

“Nobody is doing anything to get us justice. I think these people would also kill me some day. It’s better they kill me. There would be no one left to raise a voice against them then. Kill me too, I say,” Rajni Singh said in tears.

Inspector Subodh Singh was the investigating officer of the Dadri lynching case of 2015 in which Mohammed Akhkaq was killed by a few men on allegation of eating beef in Bisada village. Several Hindu men were arrested in that case by the police.

Last month, another seven accused in the case too got bail and got a hero’s reception as they stepped out of the Bulandshahr Jail.

Some of the accused in Inspector Subodh’s killing were garlanded as they stepped out of jail last month.

The seven accused were garlanded and greeted with slogans of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram'. Later, the supporters also threw a "welcome party" in "honour" of the seven men.

Shikhar Agarwal, a member of Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and Jitendra Malik alias Jeetu Fauji, an Army personnel were among those released on the bail.
