Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar was on Wednesday designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations, after China reportedly lifted its hold on the long-pending proposal to blacklist the Pakistan-based terrorist.

The decision came on the heels of a crucial meeting by UN’s Sanctions Committee on the same day.

“Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list,” tweeted Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Senior UN officials representing Pakistan at the UN were quoted as saying in Pakistani media that Azhar would officially be designated as a global terrorist by the end of the day on Wednesday.

The latest proposal to designate Azhar as a global terrorist had been put forward by the US, UK and France.
