Crisis faced by India’s hundreds of thousands of migrant workers has shown that the Union government’s centralized command-and-control approach of managing the coronavirus pandemic (Covid 19) will not work. Recent steps, from the poorly planned lockout to the decision to shut down borders without consulting the states and use the high-handed approach to control people’s movements, rather developing systems to check and test at a massive scale to contain the spread of the virus, have caused terrible hardships for India’s teeming poor.

Anthony Fauci, and his fellow top infectious disease experts, warned that the numbers are what “we need to anticipate, but that does not mean that that’s what we are going to accept. Our hope is to get down as much as we can”.

Fauci, a member of White House task force, and Bedorah and Birx who also serve on the task force, said in a presentation that 100,000 to 240,000 Americans could die despite the social distancing and other mitigation efforts. The toll could be even higher — 1.5 to 2.2million, if nothing was done, they said.

Also on Tuesday, UN Secretary General said the pandemic was the most challenging crisis we have since the Second World War and the one that needs. The deadly disease has already spread to more than 170 countries. It has infected more than 912,000 people worldwide, claiming 45,500 lives so far.

The staggering scale and reach of pandemic is unprecedented in recent history as the UN Secretary General noted at a news briefing to release on the socioeconomic impact of Covid-19. This is indeed, the most challenging crisis that needs stronger and more effective responsive and that is possible in solidarity if everybody comes together and if we forget political games and understand that it is human kind that is at stake, said UN General Secretary.

The US has most confirmed cases now. Going by nearly 30,000, the figure has stood around 205,000 last Wednesday —more than twice than number of cases in China. At least 4,500 people in US have died from the disease.

The US, which has more deaths than china, remained worst hit Italy and Spain in turns of fatalities. New York and NYC remained hit in US. These numbers as around the US, will continue to rise in the coming days and weeks.

The US President Donald Trump told reporters that the US will have a very tough two weeks. The Trump administration is accepting help from other countries. A plane load of masks and other medical equipments took off from Moscow airfield earlier for the US.
