Chandan Rai is an upcoming actor who made his mark with a laudable performance in ‘Durgamati’. In conversation with National Herald, he tells us how he has been associated with theatre and how devoted he is to his profession-acting:

Chandan, tell us a bit about your theatre background. You have been doing theatre for many years now. Where did it all start?

I had once gone to watch a play directed and performed by renowned Zakir Hussain and Sarita Hussain. I was indeed moved by their performance and wished to work with them. I am fortunate to have been associated with their theatre group called the Theatre Circle Group for 7 years now. Since then I have been part of Qaid-e-Hayat, Chekhov Ki Duniya, Dost, Sweet & Sour and many other and have played very intriguing characters.

You got your first break with ‘Doli Armaaon Ki’ long back but as far as impact is concerned, which role of yours do you find the most impactful?

I have done a variety of roles in my career so far, from lead roles to supporting characters having significant impact in the storyline. I believe in immersing myself into every character and giving every role my hundred per cent. And as for the most impactful role of mine, I do hope it is yet to come!

What about Durgamati? How did that happen?

I was part of a crime-based episodic show some time back. The director of that show was the AD for Durgamati. I believe he really liked my work from the show and was kind enough to introduce me to the director of Durgamati Mr. Ashok. I went through 2-3 rounds of audition followed by look test. I am glad I was able to get the part.

Tell us a bit about your co-stars Bhumi Pednekar and Arshad Warsi and what you feel about them?

Bhumi is an extremely talented artist. I do have quite a few scenes with her in the movie and she was extremely supportive. I got to learn a lot from her through the shooting. While I did not have any scenes with Arshad Warsi, I got to interact with him during dubbing. He is an amazing person with a great sense of humour. Both are extremely humble and It was a great experience working with them.

Where do you see yourself 5 years down the line in the industry?

I am very passionate about acting and wish to continue doing good cinema whether it’s OTT, TV or films.
