From love jihad to forced conversions to Taj Mahal and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and Hindu Rashtra, Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister Yogi Adityanath is no stranger to controversy. He has again become a target of public ridicule after making insensitive remarks on child healthcare in his state on Wednesday.

While the horror of deaths of children at Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College continues unabated, with as many as 42 kids dying in the last 48 hours, taking the count of children's deaths in the city so far to 60, CM Adityanath speaking at a public function today said: “I’ve this feeling that people will soon start leaving the responsibility of their children—who have completed two years, upon the government. Expecting government to ensure their upbringing.”

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Startup Yatra programme in Lucknow. Unsparing and scathing, many twitter users pointed out that Adityanath’s government was more concerned about cattle, Romeo Squads, temples and yoga rather than important issues of immediate public concern such as child healthcare.

Here’s a collection of twitter reactions to his comments:

Adityanath—who along with his two Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma - are going to contest the forthcoming by-polls to the state legislative council, also targeted media in the same breath. “Media reports on garbage littered at such and such place. We people think, it’s government’s responsibility. It seems everyone else has been relieved of his responsibilities,” he remarked.
