34 Students Died By Suicide On A Daily Basis During Pandemic-Hit 2020

More than 34 students died by suicide per day in India after the coronavirus outbreak in the country in 2020. This has accounted for over 12,500 fatalities in the past year, according to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

According to the data, the number of suicide by students increased by 21% compared to the year 2019. The data suggested that student suicides rose from 10,335 in 2019 to 14,825 in 2020. In many states, more than one student was committing suicide in a day.

Out of total 12,526 students who committed suicide in the year 2020, about 53% i.e. 6,598 students are from only 5 states. These states are :-

Maharashtra - 1,648 students

Odisha - 1,469

Madhya Pradesh - 1,158

Tamil Nadu - 930

Jharkhand - 704

Apart from these 5 states, 5,928 people have committed suicide from other states and union territories. According to the reports, the major reason behind suicide is stress and the help of psychiatrists and experts is required to prevent this.
