New Delhi stampede: Police implement crowd control measures
The railway officials have also decided that special Prayagraj-bound trains will depart exclusively from platform number 16

In response to the tragic stampede at New Delhi railway station on 15 February 2025, which resulted in 18 fatalities, including five children, the Delhi Police have implemented several measures to manage the heavy rush of passengers and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Enhanced security and surveillance: Authorities have set up barricades, intensified patrolling, and deployed quick reaction teams. CCTV surveillance has been bolstered, with control rooms monitoring real-time footage for effective crowd control.
Access control: To prevent overcrowding, only passengers with valid tickets are allowed on platforms and foot overbridges. Individuals without valid reasons are prohibited from loitering in these areas.
Advanced crowd management strategies: Plans are underway to introduce color-coded enclosures and advanced technology for crowd monitoring. Railway personnel will receive crisis-management training to handle large gatherings more effectively.
"A special meeting was held on Monday night, during which it was decided that passengers arriving too early before their scheduled train departure will have to wait outside the railway station. To ensure smooth movement, Delhi Police personnel, along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP), will check passengers tickets at all entry and exit points," a senior police officer told PTI.
The railway officials have also decided that special Prayagraj-bound trains will depart exclusively from platform number 16. This decision aims to streamline passenger movement and prevent confusion that could lead to overcrowding.
"Platform 16 is accessible from the ground level through multiple entry and exit points, eliminating the need for passengers to use foot overbridges. This will help in managing the crowd effectively," the officer told PTI.
The police have also prohibited loitering on foot overbridges without a valid reason.
"We observed that several people were unnecessarily waiting or standing on the foot overbridges, causing congestion and delays for others. Now, no one will be allowed to stand there without a valid reason," the officer said.
To further control the crowd, a designated waiting area with a temporary 'pandal' has been set up outside the station.
Another official said that foot patrols have been increased on all platforms, and passengers will not be allowed to sit on platforms without a valid reason.
