In a strange turn of events, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Punjab Police on Monday shot himself dead while on official duty. He was posted at Jaitu city in Fardikot district.

IGP, Bathinda Range MS Chhina has confirmed the death of the DSP Baljinder Singh Sandhu. The initial reports indicate that he took this extreme step under duress.

The DSP had reportedly gone to the Regional Campus of the Punjabi University, Patiala at Jaitu to diffuse the tension caused by confrontation of two groups of students during a demonstration. One of the groups allegedly started blaming the police for supporting the rival group.

Amid the commotion of the allegations being shouted at and the police trying to calm both the sides, the DSP allegedly shot himself in the head all of a sudden. The policemen who were accompanying him rushed him to the nearby hospital at Fardikot where he succumbed to the injury.
