Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Mughal Sarai, Sadhana Singh, triggered a political storm on Sunday after she made objectionable comment about Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati.

Addressing a rally, Sadhana Singh said, “She (Mayawati) compromised on her dignity for power and comfort… She is a blot on womankind. A woman who gulped down insults for comfort and power is a blot on womankind,” as per ANI news agency.

Sadhana was referring to the infamous VVIP guest house incident in Lucknow in 1995, when Mayawati, along with several BSP leaders, was confined in a guest house and assaulted by Samajwadi (SP) leaders, led by then chief Mulayam Singh.

The incident had created bad blood and longstanding bitterness between the two regional parties.

Attacking Mayawati, Sadhana Singh said that while “Draupadi had vowed to seek revenge for her molestation, Mayawati had gulped down insults for power and comfort.”

Singh’s comments drew sharp criticism from political parties, with SP-BSP hitting back at the saffron party.

While BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra called Singh “mentally-ill” for making such remarks, SP president Akhilesh Yadav said her comment showed the “moral bankruptcy” of the saffron party.

“This is a sign of BJP’s moral bankruptcy and desperation. This is also an insult of the women of the country,” Yadav tweeted.

“The level of language shows their mental illness. Such people should be admitted to the mental hospital of Agra or Bareilly. The people of this country will show BJP its real place. They have lost their mental balance in fear of losing the election in Uttar Pradesh,” hit out Mishra.

Rashtriya Lok Dal’s vice-president Jayant Chaudhary also expressed his displeasure over the BJP MLA’s remarks about Mayawati. “If we are not aware and don’t avenge this insult, this will become a common thing for the coming generations. This attempt to mould the country into a cruel form must be rejected,” tweeted Chaudhary.

Delhi Mahila Congress head Sharmishtha Mukherjee labelled Singh’s remarks as “filthy,” adding that misogyny was all pervasive in BJP’s mindset irrespective of gender.”

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has questioned the the BJP MLA over her distasteful remarks. Seeking an explanation, the Commission has said that it would send a formal notice to the MLA tomorrow (on Monday).

A section of leaders from the BJP also took to Twitter to express their displeasure over Singh’s remarks, with several of them demanding some action against Sadhana Singh.
