Following the scuffle in Parliament, the Delhi Police swiftly registered an FIR against Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi based on a complaint filed by BJP MPs.

In stark contrast, the police — which reports to Union home minister Amit Shah — has delayed registering an FIR against the BJP leaders allegedly involved in the incident. The Congress has accused the authorities of blatant double standards, alleging selective enforcement of the law.

Their complaint remains unacknowledged, Congress leaders said. The Opposition has denounced the disparity, terming it as yet another example of the ruling party's misuse of power and erosion of democratic accountability, emblematic of the BJP's "fascist tendencies".

Congress deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari described the actions of BJP members as “terrorist-like”, accusing them of blocking Opposition MPs' access to Parliament and carrying sticks under the guise of banners. “This is unprecedented in parliamentary history,” Tiwari asserted, claiming that the BJP’s actions demonstrate a brazen disregard for democratic norms.

Tiwari further criticised the police’s inaction on the Congress complaint, noting that he, along with senior leaders like Digvijaya Singh and Mukul Wasnik, had personally visited the police station to demand an FIR. Despite this, the Congress complaint was ignored while the BJP’s was acted upon promptly.

Political watchers say the episode reflects a deepening trust deficit between Opposition parties and Central institutions such as Delhi Police under BJP rule. Needless to say, the selective application of justice undermines the credibility of law enforcement, fueling allegations of political bias.

Notably, the home minister, whose remarks on Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar have sparked widespread controversy, and his party the BJP have yet to provide a comprehensive response to the Congress' allegations in this case.
