In a major boost for the the poll prospects of mahagathbandhan, former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU), Kanhaiya Kumar, will contest the Lok Sabha 2019 elections from Begusarai, Bihar as a CPI candidate.

Reliable sources have confirmed that Begusarai unit of the CPI has sent a recommendation for Kanhaiya Kumar’s candidature. The announcement will be made after approval from the party’s state executive in coming month.

Dominated by Bhumihar community, Begusarai is known as the left-wing bastion of Bihar. In 2014, former Congressman Bhola Singh, who started his political career as a Communist activist, won the seat on BJP’s symbol.

CPI candidate Rajendra Prasad Singh stood third in 2014 Lok Sabha election.

As per sources, while the Congress is in favour of Kanhaiya Kumar’s candidature from Begusarai seat , Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) may stake claim for the seat. Headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Janata Dal (United), which was part of Grand Alliance till 2018, won the seat in 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Political analysts believe that Kanhaiya Kumar’s foray into electoral politics will bring the Left in the mainstream political discourse.

Kanhaiya, who was a member of the All India Students Federation (AISF), the student wing of CPI, was arrested in 2016 on charges of sedition for allegedly organising an anti-India event in JNU. Along with Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were also arrested by the Delhi Police. However, due to lack of evidence, all three were released on bail by the court.
