NDPP-BJP CM hopeful Neiphiu Rio has already won

Three-time former Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Nagaland's sole MP resigned his seat to contest assembly elections from his relatively new Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party party, formed in 2017 by a breakaway faction after the ruling Naga People’s Front broke ties with the BJP. NDPP is fighting in alliance with BJP, with a 40-20 break up of seats. Rio was declared elected unopposed from Northern Angami II seat two weeks ago, after his NPF opponent Chupfuo Angami withdrew his candidature, in a surprising development.

Is Tripura Voting for a Change?

For the first time in its electoral history, Tripura is witnessing a fierce political contest between two opposing ideological forces—the Communists and the Hindu nationalists. The ruling CPI(M) is facing off against a BJP-IPTF combine. Some exit polls have suggested that BJP could win its first chief minister of Tripura today; others have given the election once again to CPI(M), whose chief minister Manik Sarkar may well pull off a fifth consecutive term. Meanwhile Congress faces existential crises in the state and BJP stokes Twipraland fire with its ITPF alliance. Do read Sanat Chakraborty’s excellent ground report on Tripura in election season on National Herald.
