Mamata sets target of winning over 215 seats in 2026 Bengal assembly polls
TMC chief emphasises party's commitment to significantly reducing the Bharatiya Janata Party's presence in state legislature

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has set an ambitious goal for the 2026 state assembly elections, aiming for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to secure over 215 seats in the 294-member assembly, The Times of India reported.
She emphasised the party's commitment to significantly reducing the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) presence in the state legislature.
Addressing a party gathering, Banerjee stated, "We will win more than 215 seats out of 294 in the next Bengal assembly elections and ensure the BJP’s seat count drops further." In the 2021 elections, the TMC won 215 seats, while the BJP secured 77.
TMC's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee echoed the CM's sentiments, urging party workers to strive for a decisive victory. He dismissed allegations of internal discord and reaffirmed his loyalty to Mamata Banerjee, stating, "Even if my throat is cut, I will still say Mamata Banerjee zindabad."
The TMC has already begun laying the groundwork for the upcoming elections, highlighted by recent events such as the Bengal Global Business Summit and the state budget presentation.
In her address, Mamata Banerjee also accused the BJP of manipulating voters' lists, alleging that the party won elections in Maharashtra and Delhi by "enrolling fake voters" from Haryana and Gujarat.
With the 2026 assembly elections approaching, the TMC is focusing on consolidating its support base and countering the BJP’s challenge in the state.
The TMC's strategic initiatives and leadership's resolve underscore their commitment to securing a fourth consecutive term in West Bengal.
