Senior Congress leader M I Shanavas (67) passed away after a prolonged illness on Wednesday, November 21, at a private hospital in Chennai. He breathed his last at around 1 am. He had undergone a liver transplant on Friday, November 2.

The Member of Parliament represented the Wayanad constituency twice in the Lok Sabha.

“His mortal remains are expected to be brought to Kochi this afternoon. and would be laid in the state for the public to pay their last respects and the final rites will take place tomorrow,” confirmed sources.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Congress leader and former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala expressed their condolences over Shanavas' demise.

“The party has lost a stalwart. I have lost a dear brother,” said the leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala said.

The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working President is survived by his wife, and two children.
