Whatsapp, the Facebook-owned app, has announced that it will stop its services on older devices with outdated software from February 1, 2020.

The messaging application said that it would discontinue support for devices which were running on Android 2.3.7 and iOS 8 or older than this software update.

WhatsApp urged KaiOS users to switch to the latest version or OS to 2.5.1 to continue using the messaging app.

Here are the devices which will be affected by Whatsapp’s new move:-

  • Apple devices- iPhone 4 or devices launched before that will no longer be able to use WhatsApp as the latest iOS they have is 9.3.6 which is too old to support the app.
  • Android devices- Devices with 2.3.7 software version are now becoming outdated for the Whatsapp. Android Gingerbread phones had already scraped the services in 2017.
  • Jio Phone- KaiOS to 2.5.1 or higher in Jio Phone 1 and 2 will continue to get support from WhatsApp.
  • Windows phones- Mobiles have already stopped getting support from WhatsApp from January 1 and WhatsApp is no longer to be found on the Microsoft Store.

However, this will not affect the majority as people using iPhone 4 are less than 5% and people using older Android devices no longer supported by WhatsApp are only 0.3%, which is almost negligible.

But the discontinuation of this service will mostly affect senior citizens who are quite familiar with the older versions and do not want to change to the newer versions.
