On Wednesday, the government confirmed that new currency notes of ₹200 and ₹50 are being issued by the Reserve Bank of India. Since then, images of the new notes have gone viral on the internet. The new ₹200 note has already been introduced on Friday and ₹50 notes in a fluorescent blue will follow shortly. But on Thursday a flutter was created when a new note of ₹50 was reportedly seen in the possession of a man in Mumbai even before the currency note was formally issued.

Initially, the new ₹200 note will not be available at ATMs, but disbursed through bank branches across the country. This is the third new currency note to be issued after ₹2,000 currency note since the demonetisation in November, 2016. ₹50 note will be the fourth.

The motif of Sanchi Stupa is on the bright yellow ₹200 notes while the motif of Hampi with chariot is featured on the currency note of ₹50.

Why RBI is introducing Rs. 200 notes?

“There is a logical need to introduce the missing denomination of ₹200, which will make the present currency system more efficient,” the RBI said in a statement.

How Twitter reacted

Twitter started getting flooded with quick reactions. Some wicked tweets compared the colour of the currency note with pulses as the price of pulses has risen up to ₹200, while others believe that it is a ‘new weapon’ to kill seculars. Some also suggested RBI should come up with ₹11,₹21 and ₹101 notes as it would be a big help for people who are looking for these exact amounts considered auspicious as “Shagun” amounts.
