The Uttar Pradesh Police on Sunday launched an investigation after a viral video showed former BJP MLA Maya Shankar Pathak from Varanasi being thrashed by a group of youths for allegedly molesting a girl from their college.

In a viral video, former BJP MLA Maya Shankar Pathak can be seen holding his ears and seeking forgiveness from a group of people beating him for allegedly passing remarks about a college student.

According to the initial police reports, that the incident occurred on the campus of a college in the Chaubepur area of Varanasi on January 9. The 70-year-old former legislator is the chairman of the institution.

In the video doing rounds on social media, a group of people is seen pushing Pathak and thrashing him. The former BJP MLA is repeatedly heard apologising to the mob while they assault him. He reportedly apologized after being beaten up, after which the family did not complain about the matter to the police.

Pathak is a two-time BJP MLA from Chiragaon assembly segment. He owns an engineering college on village Balua Pahadia Marg.

Meanwhile, the former MLA has termed the entire incident as a political conspiracy to malign his image. He said that since the girl could not read the speech properly, he scolded her and sent her away.
