Thousands of people were seen at a popular tourist spot in Goa despite the government imposing tougher restrictions to curb the Omicron variant spread.

A video that is going viral on social media shows a number of tourists walking on a road near Baga Beach in North Goa.

Apparently, the video was shot on Sunday, Jan 1st evening.

Since Goa is a popular destination to celebrate New Year & Christmas, travellers start arriving at the holiday destination from the end of Dec.

As a precaution to curb the covid 19 spread the state authorities had issued directives to hotels, restaurants and casinos to admit only guests with valid vaccination certificates or proof of a negative test result with 50% capacity.

But it seems despite all the restrictions the crowd unknowingly pushed up the COVID-19 positivity rate as the number of people was huge on the streets.

Notably, Goa’s expert committee for COVID-19 management had suggested the imposition of a night curfew, but Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that because of the festive season, it will not be possible to impose a night curfew till January 3.

The latest data released by the Health Ministry says about 388 people have tested positive in Goa in the past 24 hours and the new cases took the tally in Goa to 1,81,570.
