President Ram Nath Kovind who had been to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh urged people to pay taxes regularly for the sake of development as he revealed that he pays taxes too. President Kovind, on a three-day visit to UP, made these remarks during a stopover at the Jhinjhak town on Friday when he was travelling from Delhi to Kanpur by a special train.


However, ever since the revelation of him paying taxes for the salary that he gets has left netizens in splits. Some Twitterai have raised questions by saying that president's salary is non-taxable then why is he lying? Some have also explained the President's (Emoluments and) Pensions Act, 1951 law by saying - The President is the first citizen of the country and also the highest official. The salary and emoluments are decided by the President's (Emoluments and) Pensions Act, 1951 which was amended recently where the President's salary was hiked to five lakhs and is tax free.
