India on Monday successfully carried out the test firing of a new missile of the Agni series known as Agni-Prime at 10.55 am, off the coast of Odisha. According to the reports, it was test-fired successfully from launchpad No-4 of Chandipur. The new nuclear-capable missile is fully made up of composite material and it was a textbook launch.

"Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight tested a New Generation Nuclear-Capable Ballistic Missile Agni P from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam island off the coast of Odisha, Balasore at 1055 hrs on June 28, 2021," a PIB release said.

According to officials, Agni-Prime is a new generation advanced variant of the Agni class of missiles. It is a canisterised missile with a range capability between 1000 and 2000 km.

“Agni Prime missile is a next-generation, nuclear-capable weapon made fully of a composite material. It is a canisterised missile with range of 1,000-2,000 kilometres,” the DRDO statement said.

"Various telemetry and radar stations positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile. It followed textbook trajectory... meeting all mission objectives with a high level of accuracy," the statement added.

Last Friday, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired an extended range version of indigenously-developed Pinaka rocket at Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
