The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has awarded a contract to a Chinese company, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company Limited, for the construction of a 5.6-kilometre underground stretch, from New Ashok Nagar to Sahibabad, of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS project.

According to the reports, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Corporation won the Rs 1,000-plus crore contract as it was the lowest bidder and fulfilled all the criteria for the project, which is being looked after by the Urban Development and Housing Ministry.

This development, however, has not gone down well with many netizens as they targeted the PM Modi-led government and asked what happened to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’? Recently, union government pushed for ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ while banning Chinese apps in the backdrop of border tensions between India and China.

Soon after the report surfaced, #tags like #BoycottChina & #ChinawadiModiSarkar started trending on Twitter with many termed it as insult to the sacrifices of 20 soldiers who lost their lives in the Galwan valley clash.

Congress party also attacked the government and tweeted: “20 of our brave soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice protecting India against Chinese aggression, thousands more are on the border doing the same as we speak & all BJP does is allow Chinese companies to profit from our land. This is unacceptable & appalling. #ChinawadiModiSarkar.”

In another tweet Congress party wrote: “If the sacrifice our jawans make for the nation doesn't awaken true nationalism in BJP, we really don't know what will. #ChinawadiModiSarkar.”

Besides, many Twitter users also attacked the government. One user wrote: “So much anti-chinese political feelings in the country. So many Chinese apps banned. And now a china firm for metro project. U can fool all the people all the time... Proved.”

Another user wrote: “While you keep on boycotting Chinese goods showing gratitude to the bravehearts who have been struggling hard against PLA, our government continues supporting China. From purchasing syringe to giving contracts to Chinese firms, nothing has changed!!!”

One user wrote: “We boycott china but the govt. Pay or giving a Project of 12K cr. To Chinese company for train tunnel project. This step of govt. Gives a negative impact to the citizen who helping the country for #AtmaNirbharBharat. government should change this decision🙏#Shameles #boycottchina.”

The NCRTC, however, which is executing the country’s first Regional Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS), said the contract was awarded following the set procedure and guidelines.
