The pandemic was slow to spread in India initially but within four months it infected over 27 lakh people, claimed 51,797 lives and snuffed over 1.89 livelihoods.

According to data collated by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), as many as 1.89 salaried individuals lost their jobs since April. Out of this, around 50 lakh jobs were lost in the last month alone.

In July, 50 lakh job losses were reported while almost 39 were handed the pink slips in June, said CMIE. In April, 1.77 crore salaried individuals were laid off followed by another 1 lakh in May.

"While salaried jobs are not lost easily, once lost, they are also far more difficult to retrieve. Therefore, their ballooning numbers are a source of worry," the centre's CEO Mahesh Vyas said.

"Salaried jobs were nearly 19 million (190 lakh) short of their average in 2019-20. They were 22 per cent lower than their level in the last fiscal year," he added.

Several companies resorted to job cuts while others almost every company cut wages across sectors after the nationwide lockdown was imposed pushing the country into a recession.

Numerous economists have dubbed the current crisis as the “worst” since World War II. The World Bank predicted the Indian economy to contract by 3.2% while the IMF expects the same to plunge by 4.5% in the current financial year.

More than 55,000 cases were detected in the last 24 hours alone while 876 people lost their lives during the same time taking the overall fatalities count to 51,797.
