"Rajiv Gandhi was a man with a tremendous vision, far ahead of his times. But above all else, he was a compassionate and loving human being. I am incredibly lucky and proud to have him as my father. We miss him today and everyday," Rahul Gandhi fondly remembered and paid tribute to his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 76th birthday.

The birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi in the time when India struggles with the economic crisis and divisive politics, has reminded the country of the vision of love, harmony and peace, the values India needs the most today.

Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was a "man with a tremendous vision, far ahead of his times", Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said today as he remembered his father on his 76th birth anniversary.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi. "On his birth anniversary, tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji," PM Modi tweeted.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Delhi’s Veer Bhumi Rajiv Gandhi Memorial and paid tributes to his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 76th birth anniversary on Thursday. Rajiv Gandhi, India's youngest Prime Minister, took charge of the Congress in 1984 following the assassination of his mother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became Prime Minister at the age of 40.

Born on August 20 in 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.

His death anniversary is also observed as Anti-Terrorism day. The country marks Rajiv Gandhi's birthday as Sadbhavana Divas with an aim to encourage national integration, love, and peace among all communities. These were the values Rajiv Gandhi believed and inspired.Rajiv Gandhi's first action as Prime Minister was passing the anti-defection law in January 1985. According to this law, an elected Member of Parliament or legislative assembly could not join an opposition party until the next election.

Being the youngest Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi always raised the concerns of the young generation. He was the one whose vision brought the era of computers and technology to India.
