Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi met the families of farmers who were killed during Sunday's clashes in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri. Congress leaders had been trying to reach the district since Sunday night, but were blocked by the Adityanath government and Priyanka Gandhi was put under detention.

Rahul Gandhi reached Sitapur on Sunday evening where his sister Priyanka was under detention for allegedly defying prohibitory orders to visit Lakhimpur Kheri. Priyanka Gandhi was released shortly and then accompanied her brother to Lakhimpur Kheri district.

Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, accompanied by the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Chhattisgarh and other party leaders, first visited the family of Lovepreet Singh, a 19-year-old farmer killed on Sunday, at their home in Palia tehsil of the district and offered condolences. During their half an hour visit, the father of 20-year-old Luv Preet Singh told Rahul Gandhi that he wanted justice, not compensation.

From there, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi left for Nighasan tehsil to meet the kin of journalist Raman Kashyap, who was one of the victims. Their last stop in the district was the home of Nachatar Singh in Dhauraha tehsil.

On Sunday, eight people were killed in violence during a protest against the farm laws in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri. Four of the dead were farmers who were allegedly knocked down by vehicles driven by BJP workers.
