Beggars are very common on Indian streets and public places. All of us have encountered beggars asking for money. Often, when approached by one, we tend to give some loose change, buy them some snacks, or hand over a water bottle out of sympathy. But 26-year-old Naveen Kumar thinks this won’t solve the problem of their situation.

Engineering College professor P Naveen Kumar has been rescuing, supporting, and rehabilitating the homeless since 2016. He even made some of the entrepreneurs. This young college professor has inspired hundreds of people to reach out and help those in need.

How did it all start?

It was in 2014 when he visited a temple in Erode. An elderly lady asked for some money claiming to have been abandoned by her relatives. She needed the funds to get back home. The professor handed over Rs 15 to the lady, which was meant to get spent on his dinner. He had water to fill his stomach and slept, thinking of the lady. Since then, Naveen comes across several beggars as he always used to visit a roadside stall for his food.

Naveen, who comes from an economically weak background and have a especially abled father and bedridden mother at home, decided to help beggars by giving them a job or rehabilitating them in some manner. He started helping beggars by supplying them with food, counseling, and yoga lessons so they can be rehabilitated

How did he manage it alone?

Things changed after Naveen got graduated and got a job at JKKN College as a professor. With his salary and small donations, Naveen established a team of 400 volunteers and since 2016, Naveen has re-established 572 beggars and rehabilitated over 5,000.

The rehabilitation involves helping beggars follow cleanliness routines, providing them with food and clothes, and treating drug users through doctors.

The youngster’s work got recognition at the national level in 2018 when he was awarded the National Youth Award from the government of India. It got followed by a state youth award in 2019.

The ultimate goal of Naveen and his team is to make beggar free India!
