10 unanswered questions about the Hathras rape and murder case

A month after the gruesome crime and a fortnight after her death, 10 questions remain unanswered

1. The Hathras SP and three other police officials were suspended following SIT’s preliminary report. But the DM was spared. What did the report say?

2 BJP MP from Hathras, Rajvir Singh Diler, claimed that Rs 25 lakh, a house and a government job were given to the family of the victim. The family however told the High Court that they were not interested in any compensation. Was it a jumla?

3 Former BJP MLA Rajveer Pahalwan in his ‘personal’ capacity called a meeting of 500 people and accused the victim’s family to have killed her. Has his statement been recorded?

4 If the police registered an attempt to murder case on September 14 and if the lone accused named on that day was at home, what explains the delay in arresting him five days later?

5 The statement of the victim was recorded on September 22 but samples and swabs were sent for forensic examination on September 25. What caused the delay?

6 Why was the victim shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi after a fortnight? What was her condition that she died the very next day? Were the deceased’s clothes and nails etc. sent for forensic examination?

7 Why was the family denied the right to perform last rituals at home? Why were they locked up at home at 3 am in the morning while police cremated the body? Why were their mobile phones confiscated and why were they asked to change their statement?

8 Why was the crime spot not sealed or secured between September 14 and October 2? In contrast, hundreds of policemen surrounded the village after the cremation of the body and prevented ‘outsiders’, the media and political leaders from entering.

9 Is it possible that Hathras Police barricaded the village, cremated the body of the victim in the dead of the night, stopped and detained Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Greater Noida/Mathura, stopped the media outside the village and caned RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary and his supporters without the knowledge and approval from Lucknow?

10 The victim’s family refused to take Narco tests and this has been held against them. But will others be subjected to the tests suggested by the state government?
