The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered a 20 percent reduction in tuition fees in all non-government aided schools in West Bengal during the coronavirus pandemic.
The order by a division bench came on a Public Interest Litigation filed by a guardians' forum of 145 educational institutions. The High Court directed private schools not to charge fees under the non-academic head.
According to reports, the court also formed a three-member committee to look into all fee-related grievances.

The Chandigarh administration on Tuesday imposed a ban on hookah bars, saying they lead to transmission of coronavirus.
An order issued by District Magistrate Mandip Singh Brar said that it has been made to appear that hookah bars are operational in Chandigarh in a clandestine way and they are serving flavoured hookahs, including tobacco molasses containing nicotine, which is highly injurious to health.
Any person violating the order shall be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Uttar Pradesh excise department is all geared up to check smuggling of liquor in view of the forthcoming Assembly bypolls in the state and also the Bihar Assembly elections.
Additional Chief Secretary (Excise), Sanjay Bhoosreddy, has directed excise personnel in the state to keep a lookout for bootlegging, smuggling and over pricing of liquor in the state, especially in districts bordering Bihar.
He also ordered special drives against distillation of illicit liquor.

An advocate, Durgesh Prasad, shot dead his father and mother in the Meerganj area in Bareilly district on Tuesday, following a property dispute, police said.
Lalta Prasad, the father, has two sons and four daughters. The 72-year-old man had given one house to Durgesh and another to his younger son Umesh while he lived with his wife in the third house.
There was a dispute between him and Durgesh over the passage to the house.
Durgesh came to meet his father on Tuesday and sprayed him with bullets. When his mother came out on hearing the gunshots, she was also fired upon by the son.

Fuel consumers did not face any change in petrol and diesel prices for one-third of a month as stable global oil prices ensured that oil marketing companies did not need to go for a revision.
Diesel prices have stayed at the same level since last October 3, completing 11 days when the fuel did not see any revision. Petrol prices have been stable for a longer period, completing 21 days on Tuesday.
With no revision in fuel prices on Tuesday in the national capital, diesel continues to be priced at Rs 70.46 per litre. Similarly, prices of the fuel in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, is also stable at Rs 76.86, Rs 75.95 and Rs 73.99 respectively.

Even as 1,708 new coronavirus cases were recorded in Telangana in the last 24 hours, 2,009 more patients recovered to take the state's recovery rate over 88 percent, officials said on Tuesday.
The COVID-19 recoveries in Telangana now total 1,89,351. It has 24,208 active cases, including 19,748 in home or institutional isolation.
The state's recovery rate now is 88.15 percent as against a national average of 86.8 percent.

The food processing industry in Uttar Pradesh is set to get a major boost with PepsiCo announcing a Rs 814 crore green field project for production of potato chips in Mathura.
The unit will be set up in Kosi area of the district and will start commercial production by the middle of 2021.

Johnson & Johnson said Monday it had temporarily halted its COVID-19 vaccine trial because one of its participants had become sick, reported AFP
"We have temporarily paused further dosing in all our COVID-19 vaccine candidate clinical trials, including the Phase 3 ENSEMBLE trial, due to an unexplained illness in a study participant," the company said in a statement.
The pause means the online enrollment system has been closed for the 60,000-patient clinical trial while the independent patient safety committee is convened.
J&J said that serious adverse events (SAEs) are "an expected part of any clinical study, especially large studies." Company guidelines allowed them to pause a study to determine if the SAE was related to the drug in question and whether to resume study.
