As National Hoerald reported on May 26 Congress party on Thursday launched a massive on line attack on Modi government demanding:

  • implementation of NYAY
  • direct cash transfer to poor’s account
  • and extension of working days under the MNREGA scheme.

Lakhs of Congress activists along with the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, went online across the country and stepped up attack on Modi government, asking the ruling party to open the coffers for the migrants and poor affected by the lockdown.

While Congress president Sonia Gandhi, in a recorded video-message, said that due to the lockdown many jobs were lost, Rahul Gandhi who has been leading the opposition’s tirade against the Modi government from the forefront, said, “People need money. Every poor should be given Rs 7,500 for six months. MGNREGA should be extended for 200 days, MSMEs should be given a financial package and migrant workers walking back should be given proper transportation”,

“Put direct cash of Rs 7,500 per month in the account of every family for the next six months and provide Rs 10,000 immediately; ensure safe and free travel of labourers back home, employment opportunity and rations; and also increase the number of work days under MNREGA to 200 days to facilitate jobs in villages,” said Sonia Gandhi.

Demanding direct cash transfer of Rs 10,000 in advance and extension of working days under the MNREGA scheme, Priyanka Gandhi said, “We request Modi government to give money to the poor in this pandemic time but the Govt is not able to see the pain of the poor. This is not the time for politics…We have, in our own capacity, helped at least 90 lakh people in the last one-and-a-half month”.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said that the government should ensure free and safe travel to the migrants who are leaving for their home.

“We demand that each migrant worker family returning to their homes should be given free transportation. After being tested, each migrant worker family should be given Rs 10,000 to tide over the present crisis,” said Chidambaram in a video message.
