The controversial resolution passed by the gram sabha of Madhi in Pathardi taluka in Maharashtra, which sought to prohibit Muslim traders from setting up stalls during the Kanifnath Yatra, has been annulled. After conducting an inquiry, block development officer (BDO) Shivaji Kamble deemed the resolution unconstitutional and submitted his report to the higher authorities, leading to its cancellation.

The decision comes after a delegation from the Muslim community raised concerns over the discriminatory nature of the resolution and sought action against the local administration. In response, the BDO issued a show-cause notice to the gram sevak of Madhi and initiated an inquiry into the matter.

The inquiry committee recorded statements from gram sevaks, sarpanches, resolution proposers, and other stakeholders present at the gram sabha before concluding that the ban was unlawful.

The Kanifnath Yatra in honour of Kanifnath Maharaj — one of nine teachers of the Navnath community — is a month-long religious event with deep-rooted traditions in Madhi. As part of the rituals, devotees apply oil on the deity a month in advance and refrain from consuming fried foods or using beds and mattresses during the period.

Some villagers alleged that Muslim traders participating in the yatra did not adhere to these customs, prompting the gram panchayat to pass the controversial resolution, citing hurt religious sentiments.

However, the resolution faced strong opposition from various quarters, including members of the Muslim community, who argued that it violated constitutional principles of equality and business rights. Following the BDO’s inquiry, the resolution was declared illegal and revoked.

Meanwhile, controversial state minister Nitesh Rane is scheduled to visit Madhi on Saturday, 1 March. His visit is expected to generate political discussion, with potential for strong statements regarding the issue.

Considering this, the local administration is preparing measures to ensure that the Kanifnath Yatra proceeds peacefully and without further controversy.

Additionally, Muslim traders have submitted a memorandum to the additional collector, emphasising the need for a peaceful and inclusive yatra. The administration is expected to take necessary steps to maintain communal harmony during the event.
