In a move aimed at rebuilding its grassroots network in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress will launch an organisational restructuring campaign, the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, in Bhopal on 3 June.

The campaign will be inaugurated by Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The initiative, announced during the extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Belagavi in December 2024, is part of a larger plan to rebuild the party’s organisation from the booth level up to the top leadership. The programme was formally rolled out as the Sangathan Srijan Karyakram in 2025.

Calling it a “historic moment for the Congress”, MLA Umang Singhar said the campaign is expected to “re-energise the party’s booth-level machinery” and act as a bridge to reconnect with key social groups, including the youth, farmers and workers.

“This is not just a meeting—it is the start of a larger political and ideological journey,” he said. “We intend to rebuild the Congress from the ground up.”

The Bhopal event is expected to see participation from all AICC-appointed observers, state Congress office-bearers, members of the Political Affairs Committee and district presidents.

The Congress has been out of power in Madhya Pradesh for most of the last two decades.

It briefly returned to power after the 2018 assembly elections, forming a government under Kamal Nath.

However, in March 2020, the resignation of several Congress MLAs led by Jyotiraditya Scindia triggered a political crisis, leading to the fall of the Kamal Nath government. The BJP returned to power, with Shivraj Singh Chouhan reassuming the chief minister’s post.

Something certainly has to give, for a shift to happen.

Looking forward to the new initiative, current Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari wrote on X, "This event will be an important step towards organisational restructuring and empowerment, which will provide new energy and direction to the party in the times to come."

Political observers are watching closely, too, to see whether the talk of the caste census from the new government may now lend new impetus to the Opposition that first mooted the idea as well. Is the BJP, perhaps, nurturing its own foremost challenger? And will that spell its doom in Madhya Pradesh in 2028?
