National Award-winning film Dum Laga Ke Haisha actress Bhumi Pednekar, says the advantage of short films is that they are in a quick and to-the-point format. She has recently featured in Zoya Akhtar’s short film. Although the actress feels that every story has a certain space, be it a feature film or a short one, but at the same time she believes that short films have more impact but unfortunately our country’s audience has less exposure to such films.

“Short films are definitely more impactful. Every story needs a certain amount of time. I think we should do justice to the story and see in what format it works. But, yes, having said that, the advantage of short films is that it's quicker, faster and to the point, instead of lurking around a subject. It directly goes for the kill. Unfortunately, in our country we don’t have an audience that’s exposed to these films. It’s sad, but I feel gradual change is happening because of the internet. Because of it, there is so much material available now and there are enthusiasts who take out the time and go watch these films. I am glad it’s happening.” She said.

She also accepted that feature films have a larger audience, but every format has its own place and significance.

Films are the most powerful medium: Kabir

The Bajrangi Bhaijan director Kabir Khan believes that a film with message compels people to think, but fears that it doesn’t end up changing reality.

Published: undefined

He said, “It is powerful enough to at least make people think, make you ponder, if not change. Like after Bajrangi Bhaijaan, a lot of people thought about India and Pakistan's relationship, where we are headed. Isn’t this a better option than constantly being at war?”

Kabir’s films have always had a strong socio-political undertone. Kabul Express was set in post-Taliban Afghanistan, New York was about the effects of 9/11 attacks, and the Salman-starrer Tubelight looks at a brother in search of a missing soldier.

“Films are the most powerful medium in the country and filmmakers should always put across their point of view without fear”, said Kabir.

The filmmaker, however, says his choice of subjects is not intentional, but his aim is to blend reality with mainstream, which interests today’s audience.
