A meeting called by West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi with four political parties to create a harmonious situation in the state riddled by political violence remained "inconclusive" on Thursday.
Emerging out of the Raj Bhavan, state BJP Vice President Jay Prakash Majumdar said that the Governor came up with a five-point set of suggestions but the representative of the ruling Trinamool Congress said he could not endorse it before talking to Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee.
Majumdar appreciated Tripathi's initiative and said his party would support any step that would stop the ongoing violence and bring peace.

Heatwave conditions prevailed on Thursday, with the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir recording a high of 40.4 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological (MeT) Department said.
The minimum temperature in the city was registered at 27 degrees Celsius, it said. Monday recorded the season's highest temperature at 44.4 degrees Celsius.

British Home Secretary Sajid Javid said on Thursday he had signed an extradition request from the US for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
"He's rightly behind bars. There's an extradition request from the US that will be before the courts tomorrow (Friday), but yesterday (Wednesday) I signed the extradition order and certified it. It will be going in front of the courts tomorrow," Javid told BBC Radio 4.

The Odisha government will introduce a uniform syllabus for undergraduate courses in all universities from the 2019-2020 academic session, a minister said on Thursday.
Higher Education Minister Arun Kumar Sahu informed that a common syllabus will be introduced across universities from the ensuing academic session.
The minister held a meeting with vice-chancellors of all state-run universities on Thursday.

A 24-year old mother of two children committed suicide on Thursday in Tamil Nadu after she was scolded by her husband and prevented from using the short video-making app.
Anitha, recorded herself as she drank the poison and then sent the video via WhatsApp to her husband, who is in Singapore.
According to media reports, Anitha's husband Pazhanivel did not appreciate his wife's TikTok addiction and had asked her to quit the habit.

India is planning to launch its own space station, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K. Sivan said on Thursday.
The space station, which is estimated to weigh around 20 tonnes, would be an extension of the Gaganyaan mission -- India's first manned mission into space.
"India will set up its separate space station in the next 5-7 years after Gangayaan is successfully completely in 2022," Sivan told reporters. The space station will most likely be used to conduct microgravity experiments, he added.

Two oil tankers were hit in a suspected attack in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday and all crew members onboard were evacuated, the media reported.
The tankers were struck in the same area where the US accused Iran of using naval mines to sabotage four other oil ships in an attack last month, reports say.
The Iranian media said the two tankers departed from the port of Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The ports of Pakistan and Oman both received the distress calls from the oil tankers, Xinhua news agency reported.

The CPI-M has admitted that its rout in the Lok Sabha elections follows "an erosion of support among the basic classes".
An editorial in the CPI-M journal "People's Democracy" said: "In many industrial centres around the country, the working class has voted for the BJP. Ordering an inquiry into the whole series of events leading to an attack on two junior doctors at the state-run NRS Medical College and Hospital, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using the incident to create communal tension.
"In between all the disruptions BJP has brought the Hindu-Muslim issue in between. I see the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxists) is also fanning the trouble here. I am shocked to see the friendship between CPI-M and BJP," Banerjee told reporters.
She said there would be a comprehensive inquiry into the entire chain of events at the NRS Medical College and Hospital.

In a significant development, the Mumbai Police have filed a closure report in the #MeToo case by actress Tanushree Dutta against actor Nana Patekar, a top official said on Thursday.
"Yes, we have filed a B-Summary Report before the court," said Mumbai Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner of Police Manjunath Shinge.
The police move comes after they reportedly did not find enough evidence in the matter, virtually ending the case.

The CBI on Thursday said that it has registered a case against former member of parliament (MP) Ateeq Ahmed and others allegedly for kidnapping and assaulting a real estate dealer.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the FIR on Wednesday on the Supreme Court order of April 23, 2019.
The CBI has named former Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Ahmed, his son Umar Ahmed and 15 others in the case.

The government has convened an all-party meeting on June 16, a day before the first session of the newly elected Lok Sabha, informed sources said on Thursday.

The mortal remains of Uttar Pradesh Bar Council President Darwesh Yadav, who was shot dead on Wednesday, were consigned to flames in her native Chandpur village in Etah district.
Uttar Pradesh Minister Brijesh Pathak was among the thousands who turned up to pay tribute to the deceased. A large number of lawyers were also present on the occasion.
Family members of Darwesh Yadav, meanwhile, demanded a CBI inquiry into the murder and alleged that Manish Sharma (who shot Darwesh Yadav) had embezzled funds which apparently led to her murder.

The Indian Air Force on Thursday said that there were no survivors at the crash site of the IAF AN-32 aircraft, located 16 km north of Lipo in Arunachal Pradesh.
The team of rescuers, including 15 mountaineers managed to reach the crash site earlier in the day. The families of the 13 personnel have already been informed that there are no survivors.

Four railway policemen, including a station house officer, were booked for allegedly beating up a journalist in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, an official said on Thursday.
In a purported video of the incident, which went viral on social media late on Tuesday night, the accused Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel, dressed in plain clothes, can be seen repeatedly slapping and punching television journalist Amit Sharma. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan will visit Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, where more than 50 children have died due to suspected Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) so far.
A five member team of the central government on Wednesday visited Muzaffarpur to investigate the cause of the deaths of children.
"Harsh Vardhan along with Union Minister of State for Health Ashwani Kumar Choubey will visit Muzaffarpur to take stock of the situation," a state health department official said.

Due to incessant rains in the Kashmir Valley, the waters of the Jhelum river has breached the flood alarm level of 18 feet on Thursday, authorities said.
Unprecedented snowfall in Sonamarg and heavy downpours in the south Kashmir catchment areas of the Jhelum have swollen most water bodies and mountain streams in the valley.
Flash floods have washed away some bridges built over mountain streams in Bandipora and Tangmarg. The excess water has also inundated apple orchards in Baramulla district.
