Giving a fillip to the Polavaram multi-purpose project, the Andhra Pradesh government, after a long gap, has released Rs 1,962 crore largely for main dam related works and rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced families.
The amount has been released even as the state was awaiting disbursal of over Rs 3,000 crore by the Centre which has agreed to bear the entire cost of over Rs 55,500 crore for the project, a top official of the Water Resources Department said.
Declared as a national project under the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, Polavaram is a multipurpose major terminal reservoir project on river Godavari for development of irrigation, hydro power and drinking water facilities to East Godavari, Vishakhapatnam, West Godavari and Krishna districts in the state.

Former Uttar Pradesh Minister and senior Congress leader Vivek Singh passed away in Delhi on Friday after a brief illness.
He was 64 and is survived by his wife and two sons.
The body will be taken to Banda district where the cremation will be performed, said a family member.
Vivek Singh was first elected to the state Assembly in 1996 and went on to become one of the architects of the erstwhile Loktantrik Congress which was formed by a breakaway group of the Congress.
He had served as a minister in the Kalyan Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta and Rajnath Singh governments in Uttar Pradesh.
Vivek Singh, later, returned to the Congress and remained with the party till date.
In February this year, he had been appointed as a member of the three-member Advisory Council to party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Uttar Pradesh.
State Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu offered condolence to the departed leader and has said that the passing away of Vivek Singh was a great loss to the party.

After flamingos in Mumbai, 'nilgai' in Noida, dolphins in Meerut, it is now a leopard that has been spotted in Noorpur village in Gosainganj, on the outskirts of Lucknow.
The leopard was spotted by villagers, late on Thursday night after which the police was informed. The villagers blocked the opening of a tunnel pipe in which the big cat had taken refuge.
A local resident, Mohit Kumar, who had first spotted the leopard near the culvert said, "I ran for my life and informed the villagers and then the police. The leopard had also been spotted a few days ago in Sarojini Nagar area."

In a bizarre incident, a man climbed up a unipole advertising hoarding and threatened to commit suicide if he was not provided liquor.
The high drama began late on Thursday evening and ended after an hour when police promised him a bottle of liquor.
Confirming the incident, Kotwali SHO Geetesh Kapil said: "We managed to get him down without any injury. We had only promised but did not give him liquor. The sale of liquor is banned in the state and we are strictly following the lockdown guidelines. We are trying to establish his identity so that his family can be informed."
The policemen offered food and soft drink to the man and even counselled him before releasing him. The police officials said that the man seemed mentally unstable.

In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old man hacked to death six members of his family over a property dispute.
The incident took place on Thursday night in the Gudauli village on the outskirts of Lucknow.
The accused, identified as Ajay Singh, reached the police station immediately after he killed his father, mother, brother, sister-in-law, nephew and niece.
The deceased have been identified as -- Amar Singh, father of the accused, mother Ram Dulari, younger brother Arun Singh, his wife Ram Sakhi and their two children Saurabh, and Sarika.

An 18-year-old woman was allegedly raped by seven persons, including three minors, when she was returning to her village in Betul in Pradesh with her brother, police said on Thursday.
The accused threw the victim's brother in a well before committing the crime on the intervening night of April 29-30, they said.
The police have taken five accused, including the three minors, into custody while two are absconding, an official said.
Kotwali Police Station in-charge Rajendra Dhurve informed the woman was returning on a motorbike with her 21- year-old brother on Wednesday night to their village.
The seven accused intercepted the motorbike and threw the woman's brother in a well at around 8.30 pm, he said.
The accused took turns to sexually assault the woman till 2 am on Thursday, he said.
After being freed by the accused, the woman took out her brother from the well and reached the village in the morning, Dhurve said.
They later filed a police complaint, he said.
Two of the accused, identified as Shubham Bele (22) and Sandeep Khatiya (23), and three minors were taken into custody, he said.
The other two accused, identified as Lokesh Soni (22), a resident of Nemawar (Dewas district), and a local resident, Pawan Bele (24), are absconding, the police officer said.
Dhurve said the accused have been booked under IPC sections 376 (rape), 365 (kidnapping) and 307 (attempt to murder).
