A BJP MLA created a stir of sorts on Tuesday by threatening to topple his own party government in Karnataka if houses were not provided for the flood hit people and a video of his statement has gone viral.
During a visit to the flood affected areas in his Arabhavi constituency, the legislator, Balachandra Jarkiholi is heard telling people "Its our responsibility to provide you houses.
Im saying this on record ..that if we fail to build houses then we will topple the government." Arabhavi is in Belgavi district, the worst hit by the floods in the State.
Incidentally, Balachandra Jarkiholi's was among the 16 MLAs who had in 2010 withdrawn support to the first BJP government in Karnataka led by Yediyurappa threatening its existence.

A Delhi court Tuesday directed Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to appear before it on September 7 in a case of allegedly filing false affidavit with his nomination papers for Lok Sabha elections of 2014.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal had summoned Abhishek, the MP from Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat, for Tuesday in the complaint alleging that he had filed false affidavit regarding his education qualification.

BSE benchmark Sensex on Monday crashed about 624 points dragged by heavy losses in index heavyweights HDFC twins, Infosys, ITC and ICICI Bank amid sell-offs in global equities.
Bucking the overall downtrend, shares of Reliance Industries (RIL) rallied nearly 10 per cent, capping the Sensex loss to a large extent.
Apart from global concerns, investors remained jittery over domestic macro challenges amid slowing down of the economy and falling consumer demand in various sectors.
After diving nearly 700 points in the fag-end of the session, the 30-share Sensex settled 623.75 points, or 1.66 per cent, lower at 36,958.16. It hit an intra-day low of 36,888.49 and a high of 37,755.16.
Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty slumped 183.80 points, or 1.65 per cent, to 10,925.85. During the day, it hit a low of 10,901.60 and a high of 11,145.90.

The Supreme Court asked Kashmir Times Editor Anuradha Bhasin on Tuesday to hand over to its registrar the memo for urgent listing of her plea which seeks removal of restrictions on the media in Jammu and Kashmir after the scrapping of the provisions of Article 370.
A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra told advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for Bhasin, "you hand over the memo to the registrar and he will look into it".
Grover told the bench that Bhasin is an editor of a leading daily in Kashmir and there has been a complete lockdown in the Valley due to which journalists are unable to work.

Two members of a family, including a minor, were killed and three injured on Tuesday when a wall of their house collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district due to heavy overnight rains, police said.
The incident took place in the wee hours in Patehari village under Jigna police station area, they said.
It was an old house. The family was fast asleep when the wall collapsed, Superintendent of Police Avdhesh Pandey said.

The restrictions imposed in Jammu and Kashmir on people's movement and communications may continue for some more days and any decision on lifting them will be taken by the local administration, a top government official said on Tuesday.
Political leaders like former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, who were arrested as a "precautionary measures", will be released by the Jammu and Kashmir administration only after assessing the ground situation.
"If the trade-off is between inconvenience and loss of life, what should we choose? However, the administration is aware of the difficulties being faced by people and trying to minimising inconvenience. Any such decision will be taken by the local administration," the official said.
