LIVE News Updates: Fire at timber godown in Bhopal

A fire broke out at a timber godown in Itwara area of the Old City area on Saturday.

No one was injured in the fire which was put out in two hours by ten fire tenders, Fire Brigade spokesperson said.

The cause was yet to be ascertained, he said.

The area has slums. There are a few cloth godowns in the vicinity too.

A police official said they were investigating how the fire broke out during lockdown.

Popular Malayalam TV serial actor Ravi Vallathol passed away at his residence, here on Saturday. He was 67 and is survived by his wife.

Though he began in the Malayalam film industry as a lyricist and then as an actor, he was a favourite among the TV audience.

He has also authored short stories besides acting in 47 films and over a hundred TV serials in over a quarter of a century.

Son of hugely popular writer and drama artiste TN Gopinathan Nair, Vallathol is also the nephew of legendary poet Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon.

A Mumbai autorickshaw driver committed suicide by hanging himself sitting inside his autorickshaw, police said here on Saturday.

According to Senior Police Inspector D. Kamble of Dindoshi Police Station, Malad east, the body of the autorickshaw driver -- identified as Dayashankar A. Soni, 47, was found on Friday near the BMC Colony in Goregaon east.

According to eyewitnesses, the body was found in a seated position with a rope around the neck tied to the rod on the vehicle roof.

As per the statement of his wife, Soni was an alcoholic and suffered back and knee problems due to which he was in depression.

Bodies of five members of a family were found in a house in Singar Nagar locality here on Saturday, police said.

On receiving information that the body of a woman, Divya (37) was lying in the house of her in-law, police rushed to the spot to find four more bodies.

The other deceased are Divya's sister Bulbul (27), son Aarush (8), another child. Their bodies were found in one room. The body of the woman's father-in-law 75-year-old Rajeshwar Pachauri was found in the second floor of the house, a police official said.

He said there were injury marks on the neck of the woman while sulphas tablets and a bottle of disinfectant were found near other bodies. Further investigation is on, police said.

A 30-year-old man was killed when he was struck by lightning in a forest area in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said on Saturday.

Sajjad Hussain was grazing his sheep and goats in the forest adjoining his Pangai village in Thanamandi area when the incident took place, the official said.

A 25-year-old man was allegedly strangled to death by an unidentified person at a construction site in suburban Bandra Kurla Complex, police said on Saturday.

The incident came to light on Friday night, when a crane operator found his brother lying unconscious with a nylon rope around his neck, an official said.

A 22-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her male friend at Benaulim village in South Goa, following which he was arrested, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday and the accused, Melbourn Fernandes (24), was arrested within hours, a police official said.

Sanjay Kothari was appointed as the Central Vigilance Commissioner on Saturday, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique.

He was working as the Secretary to President Ram Nath Kovind.

"At a ceremony held today at 1030 hrs at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sanjay Kothari was sworn in as the Central Vigilance Commissioner," the communique said.

He took the oath of his office before the president, it said.

A 22-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her male friend at Benaulim village in South Goa, following which he was arrested, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday and the accused, Melbourn Fernandes (24), was arrested within hours, a police official said.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his parents at their home in southwest Delhi's Chhawla area on Friday, police said.

The accused, Satish, is unemployed. His wife, Kavita (35) is also being questioned in connection with the case, they said.

Information about the incident was received at 11.15 am. The bodies of the two victims -- Raj Singh (61), a retired Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) official, and his wife Omwati (58) -- were found lying on a bed with cut marks on their faces, a senior police officer said.

Two militants and a "hardcore" militant associate were killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Goripora area of Awantipora in the south Kashmir district in the early hours of Saturday after receiving specific information about the presence of some militants there, a police official said.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the militants fired upon the forces, who retaliated, he said.

In the ensuing gunfight, two militants and one "hardcore" associate of the militants were killed, the official said.

He said searches were going on in the area and further details were awaited.
