Water being released into Godavari from Gangapur dam in Nashik, Maharashtra

Following incessant rain in catchment areas in Trimbakeshwar tehsil of Nashik district, 5,104 cusec water is being released from Gangapur dam into the Godavari river on Friday, irrigation officials said.

The water level of the Godavari has risen but it is flowing within its banks, they said.

As much as 11,788 cusec water is being released from Darna dam in the district.

Gangapur and Darna dams were filled up 91 per cent and 89 per cent, respectively, officials said.

Of the 24 reservoirs in Nashik district, 22 are full.

27 labourers stranded in flooded area in Akola rescued

Twenty seven labourers stranded due to flooding caused by sudden rise in the water level of Chandrika river in Akola district of Maharashtra following heavy rains, were rescued, an official said on Friday.

The labourers, roped in by the forest department, had gone to plant saplings near Deori village on Thursday morning when they got stuck there due to flooding. All of them were moved to safety by late evening, the official said.

"The forest department has roped in the labourers, all from Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, to carry out the task of planting saplings on its vacant plots. When they began the plantation work on Thursday morning, there were no signs of flooding," forest department official A N Bawne said.

Two killed in cloudburst, two washed away as heavy rain lashes Uttarakhand

A woman and her son were killed in a cloudburst in Tehri district, while two others were swept away after a flooded rivulet inundated their house in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district in the early hours of Friday, officials said.

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in the hills of Uttarakhand, washing away houses, cowsheds and bridges besides destroying crops.        A cloudburst flattened a house in Tharti village of Tehri district at 3 am, killing a 30-year-old woman and her six-year-old son, sub-divisional magistrate Shiv Charan Dwivedi said.              The woman's 12-year-old daughter was rescued from the rubble and rushed to a hospital in nearby Pilkhi for treatment, he said. Bodies of the mother and her son have been recovered, he said.

80,000 more flood-hit people evacuated in Karnataka

Authorities have evacuated 80,000 more people from flood-hit and rain-affected areas in Karnataka, where the rain fury in the last few days has left nine people dead.

Joint rescue teams comprising personnel from Fire and Emergency Department, State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force and Army have evacuated 1,24,291 people so far, an official statement said Friday.
