JKPM founder Faesal’s family unaware of his whereabouts; don’t know on what charges

Former civil servant Shah Faesal, Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement (JKPM) founder, was detained at the Delhi airport on 14 August. His whereabouts are still unknown. It was reported that he was sent back to Kashmir while he was trying to go abroad to be put up on house arrest at his official residence in Jawahar Nagar, but his family claims he never came home.

Faesal’s mother, Mubeena Banoo said she only got to know about his detention through television, a communication channel restored a few days back, reported Firstpost

Shah Faesal was reportedly detained for fanning “separatist” politics under Public Security Act (PSA) to maintain peace in Jammu and Kashmir. However, he was only going abroad in an academic capacity, along with his wife.

Mubeena, says she asked her son not to leave his job and venture into politics. Mubeena said that she was constantly thinking about how her son would be, wherever he was. It is difficult in the valley, to represent the hopes and dreams of the people.

Faesal, a Fullbright scholar at Harvard, an MBBS graduate and a former IAS graduate; left a well settled job and future to represent his people. Faesal's father was shot by unknown gunmen in 2002.

Faesal's mother laments that he was not able to get through the MBBS exam in his initial shot as the exam was held four days after his father's death. He had qualified for the BDS in the first attempt.

Mubeena works as a government teacher while Faesal’s wife is also a senior government worker. He has been a hero among Kashmiris and an outspoken politician. Shehla Rashid and Javed Mustafa Mir supported him when he started J&K People’s Movement.

According to a report in Firstpost, Officials are not letting anyone know where the detainees are being held, for what duration and on what charges. There are reports through tweets and accounts that more than 500 people have been arrested and/or detained. Officials, however, said that makeshift prisons have been set up at government guest houses where the mainstream leaders have been detained.
