Commentators and politicians have reacted with shock and anger as Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala on May 16 invited single largest party BJP to form the government in the state, despite being short of a majority. Vala gave BJP’s chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa 15 days to prove his majority. The BJP has 104 seats and Congress-JDS alliance 117, after the Karnataka elections threw up a hung assembly.

The Congress party lashed out at the Governor, saying he “denigrates the Governor’s office, tramples upon Constitution, abuses the law & acts as a BJP puppet.”
