A doctor from Manipur intervened to save a young passenger during a mid-air medical emergency on an Air India flight from Tokyo to New Delhi.

Dr Loni Lirina, a critical care specialist based in Imphal, responded after the cabin crew requested medical assistance when a 21-year-old woman began experiencing severe breathing difficulties during the flight.

Upon assessing the patient, Dr Lirina identified acute respiratory distress and immediately administered oxygen support, nebulisation and essential medication. The passenger’s condition, which included a rapid heart rate, low blood pressure and low oxygen saturation, improved significantly within around 30 minutes.

The timely intervention meant that the aircraft did not need to make an emergency landing. The flight continued to New Delhi, where it landed safely, with the passenger reported to be in a stable condition.

Dr Lirina later said the woman had a history of childhood asthma but had not been on treatment for several years. She described the situation as critical when first assessed but noted that prompt treatment helped stabilise the patient.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh praised the doctor’s actions, commending her professionalism and compassion. He said her swift response reflected the highest standards of medical service and brought pride to the state.

He added that such acts of dedication serve as an inspiration and highlight the vital role of medical professionals in emergency situations.
