Two groups clash during Ganesh idol arrival procession in Mumbai’s Mazgaon

Tension briefly gripped Mumbai’s Mazgaon area on Sunday night after unidentified people allegedly threw eggs towards a Ganesh idol during its arrival procession, police said.

The eggs were reportedly hurled from a high-rise building located about 30 to 40 metres from the Ganesh pandal. The incident led to a large gathering of devotees and local residents, while reports of a confrontation between two groups further heightened tensions.

Members of the Ganpati mandal and the Akhil Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible. Police personnel reached the area and brought the situation under control.

Akhil Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti president Hitesh Jadhav condemned the incident and called for strict action against the accused within 24 hours. He said Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar had assured the organisers of cooperation and appropriate action.

Vivek Rane, deputy secretary of the Ganpati mandal, said the eggs had been thrown from a building some distance from the pandal during the procession. He urged the authorities to identify and prosecute those involved.

Senior police officers, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena, visited the area after the situation became tense. A case was subsequently registered against unidentified people under the relevant legal provisions.

Investigators are examining footage from surveillance cameras and nearby buildings to identify the suspects.

The crowd dispersed late at night after police assured the organisers and residents that stringent action would be taken. The situation is under control, while patrolling has been intensified and additional police personnel deployed in Mazgaon as a precaution.
