Wary of ‘poachers’, Sena confines its MLAs in a Mumbai hotel; AG briefs Guv on Maha situation

Call it fear of BJP’s ‘master strategist’ or trust deficit between alliance partners, but Udhav Thackeray clearly doesn’t want an encore of Karnataka, Goa or Manipur in Maharashtra

Not willing to take any chances from potential poachers, the Shiv Sena has decided to shift all its 65 legislators to a private sea-facing hotel in suburban Bandra till the state political crisis is resolved, party sources said in Mumbai on Thursday.

The legislators, who are from Mumbai and different parts of Maharashtra, are expected to be lodged at the Hotel Rangsharda near the Bandstand in Bandra West.

Meanwhile, as the clock ticked towards the expiry of the present Maharashtra Assembly's tenure on Friday, state Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to discuss legal and constitutional issues.

The hotel is barely a couple of kms from Sena President Uddhav Thackeray's residence in Bandra East, around 4 km from Shiv Sena Bhavan, 16 km from Raj Bhavan and 19 km from the Vidhan Bhavan.

When questioned on the move, Sena MP Sanjay Raut denied that any of their legislators would be susceptible to poaching while BJP minister Sudhir Mungantiwar expressed similar sentiments over his party's elected representatives.

The BJP, Shiv Sena’s alliance partner in Maharashtra, has been accused of engineering defections in other political parties in order to form its own governments. The latest case was in Karnataka where the Congress-Janata Dal Secular government was brought down and was replaced by a BJP-led government in August.

Adopting a firm stance against possible deserters, the Sena, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party have unofficially reached an understanding that in case any legislator from their respective parties defects, he/she would be defeated by them unitedly in the next elections.

It is reliably learnt that groups of Shiv Sainiks and activists of the Congress-NCP are keeping 24x7 tab on the movements, activities and visitors of their respective legislators in a bid to prevent anybody from crossing over to the BJP.

Meanwhile, as the clock ticked towards the expiry of the present Maharashtra Assembly's tenure on Friday, state Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni met Governor B.S. Koshyari to discuss legal and constitutional issues, official sources said.

Kumbhakoni reached the Raj Bhavan shortly after a Bharatiya Janata Party delegation led by its state President Chandrakant Patil and ministers Girish Mahajan, Sudhir Mungantiwar and Ashish Shelar met the Governor to seek his advice on the same lines.

"The Advocate General is likely to advise the Governor on the legal and constitutional options besides precedents available before him to enable exercise his powers and explore all the possibilities for forming a stable government in the state as per Constitutional provisions," a top official told IANS, requesting anonymity.

Even 15 days after the election results were announced, Maharashtra has lapsed into an unprecedented political crisis in which the two main allies - BJP-Shiv Sena, who secured a majority, are unwilling to form the government.

Both allies are engaged in a furious tug-of-war over the post of Chief Minister and other power-sharing aspects which have virtually pushed the state to the threshold of President's Rule.

Ranked amongst the most politically stable states in the country, in its entire 59-year history, Maharashtra has witnessed President's Rule only twice - for 112 days in February-June, 1980 and later for 33 days in September-October 2014.

Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Thursday challenged the BJP to stake its claim as the single largest party and submit a list of 145 MLAs to the Governor, or quit the race and announce publicly that it has no majority so other parties explore viable government formation options.

On the other hand, the BJP said that the political crisis would be resolved soon and incumbent Devendra Fadnavis will be the chief Minister again with both Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and state Minister Mungantiwar both separately reiterating this.
