
Laliteswar Prasad Shahi (1920-2018), a veteran Congress leader of Bihar passed away on June 9, after a prolonged illness. He was 98. Shahi breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, at 7 am. His body was later flown to Patna. The cremation will take place tomorrow on the banks of Ganga in Patna.
LP Shahi contested polls for the first time in the first general election in 1952, and was elected Member of Legislative Assembly, Bihar on a Congress ticket. Before entering politics, he participated in the freedom struggle during the Quit India movement of 1942.
He was taken as a Deputy Minister in the Bihar Council of Ministers by Krishna Sinha, first chief minister of Bihar. Thereafter he held charge as Cabinet Minister in Congress governments.
He was elected to Parliament in 1984 and was inducted as Minister of State by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
A man known for his love for fitness, LP Shahi even in his 60s used to do regular exercise. Moving with time, Shahi could be seen jogging in early morning on Delhi roads wearing shorts as Rajiv Gandhi wanted his ministers to be fit to work.
